The Kraken can attack any of the cities of Thylea. It can swim up rivers and crawl across the ground to reach cities that are far from the coast. Of the four Nether Titans, the Kraken is the only one that was not freed from the Nether Sea, as it had already freed itself centuries ago. It saw this opportunity to devastate Thylea and seized it. The Kraken is the most intelligent of the Titans and will not throw its life away if at all possible.

A wall of water rises up from the ocean and crashes into the city’s port, sweeping away the ships and sailors unlucky enough to be caught in its path. Seconds later, a massive tentacle emerges from the water and lashes out to pluck a screaming victim from the street. His cries are cut short as the writhing appendage instantly crushes him to pulp. A dozen more flailing tentacles appear from the water, snatching up helpless victims and dragging them into the depths. Another massive wave smashes onto the shore as the Kraken raises its enormous body from the sea. It tilts back its head and opens its giant maw to let loose a deafening, bloodthirsty scream.

Researching the Kraken#

If the heroes take some time to research the Kraken, they can learn the following:

Š A successful DC 20 Intelligence (Arcana) check reveals

that while the Kraken is the most intelligent of the Nether Titans is also the one most susceptible to attacks on its mind: the Kraken is not immune to charm magic. Š A successful DC 20 Wisdom (Nature) check reveals it is

immune to fear and lightning.

Trident of Andromeda#

This myth can be learned through the appropriate spell or a successful DC 20 Intelligence (History) check.

Millennia ago, at the height of the Gygan Empire, Emperor Surnak of the Endless Storm forged a magical trident to slay the Kraken that plagued his realm. He named it after his daughter, whose blood quenched the weapon’s molten edge. With the trident, Surnak struck down the sea titan and drove it beyond the Forgotten Sea.

Two thousand years later, during the Gygan war against the Malborne, the trident was lost when the reigning emperor fell in battle. Legends say it was entombed with the Malborne champion who claimed it, buried somewhere among the mist-shrouded isles of the Cerulean Gulf. Refer to Scorpion Island in chapter 2.

illustrated quote
We have long known about the Kraken, and we’ve had rumors of the Tarrasque, but these other creatures are entirely unknown to us. The Nether Dragon seems to be some demon out of Hades, whereas the Behemoth can only have been created from the primordial chaos at the dawn of time. —Vallus, Goddess of Wisdom
